From the field to the field of life
The unstoppable journey of a Nepali football warrior — Awareness · Discipline · Consistency
AFC President's Cup Final।
तर उनले एउटा बाटो रोजे — "Food as Medicine" र "Exercise as Medicine"।

Birth and Childhood
On Wednesday morning, between 4 and 5 a.m., on the 1st of Mangsir 2034 B.S. — that is, 16 November 1977 — a boy was born. His name: Ganesh Budhathoki. With that birth began not just a name, but an unstoppable journey.
His childhood was not ordinary. While other children played carefree on the playground, Ganesh made an extraordinary decision — at the tender age of 15, in 2049 B.S., he joined the Nepal Police boys' service (Police Boys). At that age most children are busy with schoolbooks — but Ganesh chose the path of serving his country.
The School of Discipline — Nepal Police
After completing five years of boys' service, in 2054 B.S. he was appointed as a Police Constable and formally joined the Nepal Police.
Police life taught him discipline, duty and responsibility. But inside Ganesh a fire was burning — the fire of football.
The Call of the Green Field — Mahendra Police Club
In 2056 B.S., Ganesh Budhathoki entered Mahendra Police Club (today's Nepal Police FC) — one of the most prestigious names in Nepali football. But getting through the club's door and getting to play on the field are two different things.
From his very first day, Ganesh faced a harsh reality — five years on the bench as an extra. Sweating every day without stepping onto the pitch. But Ganesh was patient — and that patience bore fruit. After five years of waiting he earned his place as a regular player and stayed active in the team until 2063 B.S.
And not only that — in one A-Division League match, he became Captain of Mahendra Police Club. Not a captaincy handed over by the coach — one given by circumstance. In that match the team's senior players got injured, one after another. And by seniority — the name of Ganesh Budhathoki came forward. The captain's armband came to his arm.
Not the coach — the destiny of sport gave him that honor. And he carried that responsibility — because only a man made ready by five years on the bench can hold a team together in such a moment.
In the 2062 A-Division League he played nearly 26 matches — proof of his consistency and reliability. In 2063 he played 18 matches — and that same year, made history on the field in Lahore at the AFC President's Cup.
The Pain of the Bench — A Player's Silent Struggle
There is something that is never written in tables, never printed on the pages of history — but a player's heart never forgets it.
Just think — waking at 5 a.m. Sweating alongside your teammates. Drilling, running, striking the ball. Match day comes — you put on the kit, tie your boots — but your name is not on the list. Your friends are running on the field. You are on the bench.
Waiting for the coach to call your name just once — every week, every month, every year. Going home with a thousand questions — "Am I not enough? Do I have no talent? How long must I wait like this?" Someone at home asks, "Did you play today?" You smile — while something breaks inside.
Five years. Not one month, not one year — five full years. But Ganesh Budhathoki did not quit. He did not complain. He did not leave the field. He rose every morning — sweated — stayed ready. Because he knew — opportunity comes only to those who are ready.
And that opportunity came. To stand wearing the captain's armband on the very field he had once watched from the bench — that moment was the answer to five years of pain.
The Greatest Moment — AFC President's Cup 2007, Lahore
From 20 to 30 September 2007, the third edition of the AFC President's Cup was held at the Punjab Stadium in Lahore, Pakistan. Mahendra Police Club had won Nepal's Martyr's Memorial A-Division League that year — and on that strength, they arrived in Lahore.
The group stage had its ups and downs. In the semifinal they faced two-time champions Regar-TadAZ of Tajikistan — but Mahendra Police stood firm and won 2–1. A historic achievement for Nepali football.
The night before the final — a silent prayer
The night before the final, the team conference was underway — "Who plays tomorrow?" Rabin Shrestha, the Left Back, had come down with a fever — so the question was who would take his place. There were two names for that position: Ganesh, and one other player.
Inside Ganesh, a dream was beating — "I must play international football. I will." Medals from countless matches were piled up at home — but the dream of an international field was still unfulfilled.
Ganesh's name was put forward. And right there — two of his own teammates said it openly: "We are not in a position to take the risk of playing Ganesh."
A man who had sat five years on the bench. Foreign soil. The biggest goal of his life — one arm's length away.
But Ganesh said nothing. He did not argue, did not ask, did not let anger rise. Silently, he remembered God. "O Lord — Your will." That night passed in silent prayer. And what happened the next day — the world saw.
The Final — 30 September 2007
Mahendra Police Club vs Dordoi-Dynamo (Kyrgyzstan) — Punjab Stadium, Lahore. Attendance: 2,000. The match began. Dordoi scored from a penalty in the 8th minute. The Nepali team fell behind.
And then — what no one had imagined. In the middle of the match, Rabin Shrestha collapsed on the field — the fever had taken his strength.
In the 68th minute — "Ganesh Budhathoki — he's on! He's playing!" DF number 6 stepped onto the field, in place of Rabin Shrestha. AFC President's Cup Final. Lahore, Pakistan. Nepal's flag on his chest.
The very man they had called a "risk" now stood on the field of an international final. Not through effort, not through argument, not through anyone's recommendation — purely through grace. A whole night of prayer reached that goal — it reached that goal.
Five years on the bench. Thousands of drops of sweat. One night's silent prayer. And that dream — came true. Almost before he knew it. That moment cannot be bound in words — only the heart of Ganesh Budhathoki knows it. Radhe Radhe 🙏
In the 74th minute Kornilov scored a second. At 90+2' Ju Manu Rai pulled one back from a penalty — but time had run out. Final score: Mahendra Police 1–2 Dordoi-Dynamo. Runners-up. Even in defeat — this was the highest international achievement in Nepali club football. And Ganesh Budhathoki was part of that historic team.
The Path of Coaching and Teaching
After leaving the playing field, Ganesh chose the path of sharing knowledge. As a PE teacher in many schools of Kathmandu, he taught sport and discipline to the young generation — passing on what he had learned on the field.
Along the way he earned his AFC coaching licences — AFC 'C' Licence, AFC 'B' Licence and AFC Futsal Level 1. These established him as a respected coach in Nepali football.
In Search of Change — A New Chapter
In 2065 B.S. he was promoted to Assistant Sub-Inspector of the Nepal Police. During his service he was also posted at the Central Jail. Finally, he retired at the rank of Sub-Inspector — after 18 proud years of service.
But his mind was still searching. In 2017 he made a bold decision — to go to Poland.
The Poland Chapter — From a Chicken Farm to the Football Field
When he reached Poland, the work waiting for him was — cutting chickens on a poultry farm. A player who had played an AFC President's Cup Final, a man who had captained in the A-Division League — now cutting chickens. Such is the irony of life. But Ganesh felt no shame — no work is small; only people make themselves small.
And even in Poland — he did not leave football. There he founded a football team called "Team Brother." On foreign soil, in an unfamiliar country — he stood on the football field with a Nepali heart. Because football is in his blood — even the Polish cold could not freeze it. After some time he returned to Nepal — with new dreams and new energy.
The Road to Portugal — Dream Meets Reality
In 2019 Ganesh Budhathoki reached Portugal — Porto, a proud city of Europe. He carried a dream — to do something in football for Nepalis living abroad. From 2019 to 2025 he tried — connecting the Nepali community through football.
But reality was harsh. The structures for football development among Nepalis abroad were not easy — money, time, organization, all in short supply. The dream was there, but not the soil. Ganesh understood — the biggest game of our time is health. Wherever a person lives — with health, everything is possible. Without health, nothing is.
The War Against Five Diseases — and Victory
Few people know this. At one time, Ganesh Budhathoki suffered from five diseases. His body had begun to give up. He was heading toward a life dependent on medicines.
But he chose another path — "Food as Medicine" and "Exercise as Medicine." Not pills — nature's food. Not the doctor — regular exercise.
Today? All five diseases are gone. The body is strong again. The mind is bright again. That experience gave him one firm belief — a disease-free life is the greatest wealth.
The Light of Spirituality — Radhe Radhe
To understand Ganesh Budhathoki's journey, one must understand this — he is not only a football player or a coach. His soul rests in the Hindu path of devotion. "Radhe Radhe" — it is not just his greeting; it is his philosophy of life.
When he sat on the bench for five years — Radhe Radhe.
When the AFC Final was lost — Radhe Radhe.
When he had to cut chickens in Poland — Radhe Radhe.
When five diseases surrounded him — Radhe Radhe.
When he had to wash dishes in Porto — Radhe Radhe.
In every situation, he did not fall — because he accepted every moment of life as God's grace.
"Courage, patience — all is the grace of Radhe Radhe."
Radhe Radhe — The Voice of the Soul
Even in Porto, Ganesh Budhathoki has not stopped. He regularly posts fitness and motivation videos on TikTok — in Nepali, for Nepali youth. His message is simple:
"Eat nature's food. Exercise regularly. With health, everything is possible."
A journey that began at 15 as a Police Boy — five years on the bench, the captain's armband, an AFC Final, a chicken farm in Poland, a war against five diseases, a kitchen in Porto — this is not the story of an ordinary man. This is the story of a warrior.
A warrior who fell and rose again, every single time. Who made both football and spirituality the foundation of his life. Who healed his own body — and now shows others the way.
